With whom do you work?
We work with patients across the life-span and continuum of functioning, from children with ADHD to adults with schizophrenia, from trauma survivors to couples wanting premarital work. Ultimately, we are a trauma informed, growth oriented practice that offers therapy, testing, mental health medication management, and neurofeedback training.
What is your approach?
We frequently, though not always, use diagnostic testing to determine how clients got lost in the woods and more importantly on how to find their way out. Often part of the path out of the woods means therapy, and possibly mental health medication and other approaches. In counseling, our therapists use a variety of modalities, including a narrative approach to knowing, understanding, and accepting your story called SITT. We also use IFS, which helps us to understand why different parts of us want different things at the same time in order to lead to more self-control and contentment. We all use a multi-model approach, meaning we use what works best for the client in front of us.
How long will it take?
Every person’s path is different, but therapy can sometimes be a journey of months if not years. This is because the most healing part of therapy (and we know this from research) is the relationship between the client and the therapist. It takes time to develop that trusting relationship. Likewise, most of the problems clients experience did not develop overnight, so it often takes a while to relearn a new way to do things. That being said, we are trying to graduate our clients from therapy. The goal is not perpetual conversations and exploration. The goal is real, lasting change.
Will I have homework?
Yes, homework is not mandatory, but it is often an essential part of one’s healing. Homework offers a chance to put into practice the things we’ve been working on in the therapy office. Plus, the more client’s follow through on homework, the sooner they graduate from therapy.
How often will we need to have a session?
Most people find weekly sessions to be the most beneficial. 1 session every other week is still a good option. Anything less than that will likely be less beneficial towards contributing to lasting change.
Tell me something fun about yourself!
When I have free time, I like to do carpentry projects big and small.
Can you read my mind?
I just knew you would ask that….
What does it mean to be a wholistic therapist?
Wholistic mental health care means understanding the biological, psychological, sociocultural, and spiritual aspects of a person’s functioning and behavior. All experiences are bio/psychosocial/spiritual, and being a wholistic therapist means being able to fluently speak all four of these languages. A large part of the healing journey in therapy is teaching our clients to better speak these languages as well.
How do I know if I have trauma/PTSD?
Trauma is whatever overwhelms our ability to deal with it in the moment. When we see a pattern of someone behaving compulsively, continually having unwanted experiences, or feeling especially stuck, those can be good indications that they have unprocessed trauma, which is negatively impacting their life. This can be helped in therapy! PTSD is a technical term that is rather specific in its application. Many people who would not qualify for a diagnosis of PTSD would still qualify for an unspecified trauma and stressor-related disorder, which is the technical way of referring to complex PTSD, which is often more related to a “death by a thousand cuts” rather than an isolated event of being particularly overwhelmed.
Legal: No Surprises Act and Good Faith Estimate?
You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost.
Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services.
You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services.
You can ask your healthcare provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.
Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises
